What Color Straw

It is a cold Saturday in January, and Sam sits on a stool at the kitchen counter. A lukewarm cup of hot cocoa "in the tree cup, in the tree cup" sits on the counter in front of him. I dare not just hand him a straw without asking first.

What color straw do you want, Sammy?

Is there football on today?

Yes. What color straw?

What teams are playing?

The Atlanta Falcons and The New Orleans Saints. What color straw do you want?!

Who do you want to win?

I guess the Falcons. What color straw?!

What color are the Falcons?

Red and black. What color straw?

Red.

[sigh]

Well, at least he had a reason for his indecision. Josie refuses to make many decisions so I end up making them for her then she has a fit. Trying to teach her that she has to make a decision. Not choosing is not an option. Patience is so hard to come by in my house!

Katherine, I remember when Sam went through a phase like that. Excruciating for all of us. You can't win. If you make the decision to avoid a meltdown, they have a meltdown because you made the decision. But if you don't make the decision they have a meltdown because they can't make a decision. I started lying. If Sam would have a fit because I gave him the wrong strong I'd say that's all we had. We were out of all the other colors. Of course that backfired when he got old enough to ask to see the rest of them. [sigh] Yah - no surplus of patience here either.
