River Day

When we packed up and left the house, it was a little before 11am and we weren't really sure if we'd actually be going to the river.  The man of little faith thought perhaps Willy and Jess would be too tired after a late wedding the night before, and their farm is out of cell service range so we wouldn't know for sure until about noon, the time the two boys had decided we'd meet when they'd discussed it 4 days ago.  But we left the house with two children's life jackets and four giant striped towels and swimming suits and snacks and margaritas on ice and the back-up plan to hit LaCanne Beach if we didn't hear from them before we got to town. Sam had constant questions about how deep the water was and where the big fish swam and whether or not there were sharks and how do we know and why doesn't the salt water in the ocean come up the river.  Eva was just concerned that we were going to make her take off her winter hat and pink winter boots, the perfect accessories for a hot summer water outing.  We had just enough time at LaCanne to get both kids used to the water and Sam a little less anxious about big fish in deep water before we got the text that we had been summoned to Homer Landing for a short ride on the Willy Express to Mosquito Island where there were lots of big kids for Sam to swim with and lots of grown ups for me to talk to and lots of fun for everyone in the family.  So grateful for generous friends who make this life we have possible.  What a perfect way for our family to enjoy its first ever river outing.
